Hot Red

Yesterday (Monday), and today (Tuesday), Bagryana read a lot from Ivila Alexandrova’s Hot Red. It’s a big book, written in Bulgarian (and not yet translated to English). The content is ferocious, but in a more formal way, I was interested in the rhythm of Bagryana translating on the fly - the pauses, the uncertainty, the micro struggles for the most appropriate phrasing.

In the book:

“In the end only a stone is objective… this worries me because it stops me being albe to understand.”

Wiping out the memory.

“In memory, only the most recent memory is remembered. The new killings cover the old killings.”

“This question doesn’t have an answer, that’s why it can’t be asked.”

this notion of there being ‘no why’ in terms of the subjugation of the human keeps returning. No explanation. No rationale. No sense. No why. It is something Primo Levi wrote about).
