the bringer
Words being done to me. Splattered by words.
Improvising to speeches of former head of Bulgarian communist state Todor Zhivkov. Stimulating improvisation - playing with rhythm, tone, space, but not at all aware of what it was that was being said.
Bagryana talked of the physical work being “imbued with presences from the outside”. Later, she discussed the idea of how, in Bulgaria, “one could never be fully sincere except at home”.
She talked of the informant, the one who did the betraying of gk - the literal translation as “the bringer” (of information).
Responding to the physical work, Bagryana described “not leaving the body”, of a state that remains regardless of what is occurring physically. I am not sure though, it felt like the states were different. What was the same was a sense of the abnormal (or not quite right).
I thought a little bit about listening to the Zhivkov speeches (in a later improv, rather than ‘being the speaker’, I became the listener. In this listening, I have moral compromise, I am despising myself, and I have the ability to feign interest.
Bagryana discussed an old radio as a prop. I thought about it as a shadow (through a gobo). She talked of the “state of being as a metaphor” … I wonder, though, what is beyond the state?
